The 125 Anniversary of Chiropractic
This week marks the 125th Anniversary of Chiropractic. In 1895, Daniel David Palmer gave the first Chiropractic adjustment to Harvey Lillard and that was the beginning of this science art and philosophy that has helped to heal millions of people throughout the world. Harvey Lillard was deaf for many years. DD Palmer, who had been studying the spine and it’s relationship to the central nerve system, noticed a vertebra in his upper neck spine out of alignment, and proceeded to adjust it to its proper alignment. Harveys hearing returned! Chiropractic grew, but it was his son, BJ Palmer, who brought Chiropractic to the forefront and started the first Chiropractic College in Davenport Iowa. During the Spanish Flu epidemic, National figures show that 1,142 chiropractors treated 46,394 during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients – one out of every 859. In Iowa, medical doctors treated 93,590 patients, with 6,116 deaths – a loss of one patient out of every 15. In the same state, excluding Davenport, 4,735 patients were treated by chiropractors with a loss of only 6 cases – a loss of one patient out of every 789.
These significant results contributed to the growth of now the largest natural health profession in the country.
After being a nurse for 10 years, I chose to be a Chiropractor. Over the last 34 years, I have seen people heal from severe gastrointestinal disorders, asthma, ear infections, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, reflux, even deafness to name a few. The truth is, I didn’t heal them. I adjusted the spine, removed the nerve interference, and the body healed itself. The body is an amazing machine that has the ability to heal itself from the inside/out. We often say, the body needs no help, just no interference. Chiropractic helps to restore LIFE!
